An Often Overlooked Family Member:
The Family Pet
The term “estate planning,” often connotes to many that you must have an “estate” to require estate planning solutions. It is a myth that you need millions of dollars worth of an “estate,” in order to gain incredible benefit or value from simple and comprehensive planning. Estate planning solutions are most often sought when experiencing a significant life change, such as getting married, buying a house, having a child, or moving to a new geographic location.
While your biggest priority in estate planning should be caring for your family members and loved ones in the event something happens to you, the beloved family pet is often overlooked in this planning. Who will take care of Fido the dog if something happens to you? Where will Fido’s new family get the financial resources to care for Fido? These are important questions and conversations to have, in addition to discussions regarding the other important estate planning issues. In many instances, an Animal Care Trust might be an appropriate solution to make sure Fido will have the resources he needs to continue to live a well cared for life.
If you find yourself experiencing one of the significant life changes mentioned above or you are a pet owner, please contact us to discuss how we can make sure every member of your family will be well cared for should something happen to you.
